“To attain knowledge, add things every day. To attain wisdom, subtract things every day.” ~ Lao Tsu
“You must unlearn what you have learned.” ~ Yoda
So many things we have learned in our lives have been cemented in our brains, and indeed our culture.
Things we must unlearn:
~Happiness comes in a box from the mall.
~It’s too late to reinvent yourself.
~People are born a certain way in regards to their creative and intellectual potential.
~Following directions, hard work and obeying all the rules is the path to success.
~Our capacities decline as we grow older.
~It’s not okay to be wrong.
~Only some of us have a passion, and that passion (most of the time) can’t be our work.
~Making a lot of money will make us happier.
~Our IQ scores, standardized test scores, or other formative assessments have a lot of bearing on our success as human beings.
~Failure is bad.
~We must keep up with the Jones’.
~It matters what people think of us.
~We don’t have enough time to chase dreams.
~The grass is greener on the other side.
A little something extra in this post: The beauty and power of music.
“This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.” ~ Leonard Bernstein
