5 Ways To Get “Unstuck”

Have you ever felt “stuck” in your own life?

I have, and I know many people who have felt that way as well.  If I had a dollar for every person I have spoken to who explains that they are “stuck” for some reason or another I could retire now.

There have been plenty of times that I have been dissatisfied with the way my life was going.  I have felt crappy and out of shape, overwhelmed with debt, and behind the times with technology, for starts.

Staying stuck in your life is a choice.  Getting unstuck is a choice as well, and requires small steps.  It’s never too late.


Here are 5 ways to begin the process of getting “unstuck”:

  1. Take responsibility for your circumstances. I got into debt all by myself.  I stopped eating well and started sitting on my butt without any help.  I stopped reading non-fiction books and blogs and wasted time watching TV instead.  All me, baby.  You must accept your current situation, take responsibility for it, learn from it, make the necessary changes, and move forward.
  2. Question your “stuff” once and for all.  Pick up a random object in your house.  Check it out and think about it.  Do you need this thing?  If you don’t, why do you still have it?  Start listing these things, and get ready to get rid of them.  Getting out from under your stuff will “unstick” you really fast and will free up space for other changes.
  3. Stop looking for the easy road.  Getting unstuck requires serious behavior modification, period.  Everything that we have done worthwhile in our lives initially challenged us, and that is how it should be.  Behavior modification takes time, but only a tiny bit of time each day.  The weeks and months go fast.  You will be surprised at the massive change that can happen in one year.
  4. Stop worrying about time that has disappeared.  Not easy, I admit.  I still pine over stuff that has passed, but the fact is that worrying about yesterday is energy completely wasted.  I will never have all the answers, but I’m damn well going to try to get all of them over time!  Most of the great things I have done I have learned through failure first.  Continue your journey and don’t be afraid to fail.
  5. Ditch your fear.  Imagine quitting your job and pursuing your passion…tomorrow.  Did you just get scared?  I did a little as well. But ask yourself: Why are you afraid?  Do you really think you won’t be okay?  If you cannot afford to take a pay cut, is it because your lifestyle has inflated too much?  Will you need to learn a new craft?  If so, know that people reinvent themselves all the time; so can you.  Fear is a figment of our imaginations.Pick one habit to change.  Just one.  Identify the actions that you know will get you on the road to changing this one habit and write them down from toughest to easiest. Then commit to completing the list one by one (hardest first, so the rest seem easier as you go). Remember to just start, and start easy
